SBLD 223 – Form, Space, and Order
Instructor: Prof. Charles Boggs

This SBLD 223 project focused on exploring form, space, and the connections between personal experiences. The challenge was to design a cohesive environment composed of three distinct yet interconnected spaces, each inspired by a personal interest: a favorite artwork, a favorite song, and a bridging element that unified the overall experience.

I selected White on White by Kazimir Malevich for the art-inspired space and Ho Hey by The Lumineers for the music-inspired space. The design translated these inspirations into immersive environments that explore perception, reflection, and belonging. The art space emphasizes perspective and observation, using dramatic lighting and reflective materials to reveal hidden layers. The music space creates warmth and intimacy, encouraging personal reflection and a sense of connection. A combined experience links the two, fostering interaction and conversation between visitors.

Through this studio, I developed a deeper understanding of creating experiential environments, including spatial sequencing, materiality, lighting, and the translation of abstract inspiration into tangible design. The project also emphasized the importance of cohesion, narrative, and human experience in the design process, balancing creative intent with the functionality of the spaces.
