The Layout
Building Construction and Systems for Interiors (INDS 306)
Instructor Prof. Nadia Pidgeon
This course focused on understanding the building systems and construction methods that support interior environments. Through a magazine-style project, we explored the key construction systems required to build a house, including foundations, structural systems, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical layouts. The course emphasized learning how these systems function together and how they directly impact interior design decisions.
In addition to the publication, we created a detailed three dimensional model replica of the I Love Lucy set. The model documented the construction process from the ground up, beginning with poured concrete foundations and rebar systems and extending through wall assemblies, window sections, and roof construction with asphalt felt layers.
Through this class, I gained a deeper technical understanding of how buildings are constructed and how interior design intersects with structural and mechanical systems. The course strengthened my ability to design interiors that are not only visually resolved but also informed by realistic construction methods and technical constraints.
